A Family Adventure with Bee’s Knees Portuguese Mini-Courses

This year, I’ve been enjoying using the Bee’s Knees Portuguese mini-course “O Açaí” to teach my sons a variety of skills in Portuguese, including:

  • Learning about açaí.

  • Numbers from 0-25.

  • How to order açaí and toppings.

  • Practicing good manners.

  • Speaking about money.

  • Colors and how certain foods grow.

  • Vocabulary related to açaí.

  • Using definite articles and one way to express the future tense.

  • Making and responding to simple invitations.

The “O Açaí” mini-course offers plenty of activities to support these skills, and I even created four role-play scenarios included in the course. My sons and I have had so much fun pretending to run an açaíteria! On weekends, we buy açaí from the supermarket and set up our little shop at home (following the mini-course instructions). Sometimes we invite relatives and neighbours to join us. They read the scripts provided, and my sons help them with pronunciation and translations.

These role-playing activities have become a cherished part of our routine. We love practising how to order an açaí bowl and taking turns as the shopkeeper. I can confidently say these activities have brought so much joy to our family—and we continue to enjoy them regularly!

A Real-Life Portuguese Adventure

Our love for these mini-courses inspired a road trip to the Gold Coast, where many Brazilians live. I researched açaíterias that let customers choose their own toppings and took my sons there. I asked if they could practice their Portuguese, and the friendly Brazilian staff happily obliged. Watching my sons confidently place their orders in Portuguese was a moment of pure pride and joy for me.

Seeing them connect with another language and culture so naturally was a dream come true. While they may never need to be fluent in Portuguese living in Australia, sparking their curiosity and interest is my ultimate goal. The joy on their faces during and after the experience was priceless.

Learning in Action

Our weekend wasn’t over yet! At the beach, we watched some footvolley, a perfect tie-in to the “GINGA” mini-course I created for Bee’s Knees Portuguese. This course is packed with activities to learn about body parts and movements from soccer and capoeira. While watching the game, my sons and I spoke in Portuguese about the moves, like joelhada (knee strike) and cabeçada (header). They even began chatting with Brazilians nearby in both Portuguese and English, eager to express themselves beyond what they’d already learned. (Footvolley is also introduced in the “A praia” mini-course.)

Later, we attended a Brazilian festival where my sons witnessed capoeira in action. Students and teachers performed in a roda, playing instruments, singing, and demonstrating the moves they’ve been learning about in the “GINGA” course. Seeing their lessons come to life was an unforgettable experience for them—and for me.

At the festival, my sons had the opportunity to test out their Portuguese at the food stalls. The boys experienced firsthand how receptive and positive Brazilians are when others make the effort to learn their language. The friendly interaction with the staff made the moment even more special, boosting their confidence and showing them the joy of connecting with others through language.

When my sons returned to school, they told and showed their classes about theses experiences during their news presentation.

Encouraging Cultural Immersion

If you have the chance, take your kids on a road trip or find ways to immerse them in Brazilian culture and language. The Bee’s Knees mini-courses prepare families for these experiences, allowing you to guide and facilitate rich learning opportunities. With these courses, you can create memorable, meaningful Portuguese learning adventures for your family.
