Bringing Language to Life: Fun, Immersive Ways to Learn Portuguese
Living in a country where the language isn’t your own is a challenge—but also an adventure. What were the most immersive and fun experiences that enriched and accelerated your language learning? Chances are, the moments you remember most were both enjoyable and pushed you outside your comfort zone.
That’s exactly how it’s been for me. At 17, I took an aerobics class in a small town in Argentina. I still remember the instructor’s commands, the new words I picked up as she guided the class, and her puzzled expressions as I struggled to keep up. That, to me, is the magic of language learning—being thrown into real-life situations where understanding is essential, and every interaction fuels curiosity.
I’ve played cards, tennis, walked pilgrimages in foreign lands, attended business meetings, and even been interviewed on the radio in languages I was still learning. Each experience felt like being out of my depth, yet each one deepened my love for language. And I know you’re doing something similar every day—immersing yourself in a language, living and breathing it.
But what about the people around you? How are you creating those same exciting, slightly crazy language experiences for your children, friends, or students in Portuguese?
That’s exactly what I’m doing with Bee’s Knees Portuguese—crafting experiences that make learning fun, meaningful, and unforgettable. My mini-courses go beyond just speaking. To truly engage with a language, you need to read, write, listen, and experience it in a way that feels natural and exciting.
Take my boys, for example. They jumped straight into learning how to do a surf take-off in Portuguese—not because they had to, but because it was fun. One day, I hope they’ll take a real surfing lesson in Brazil, and thanks to these mini-courses, they’ll be ready. They can already order an açaí bowl, follow soccer instructions, pack a beach bag, create and follow a shopping list, start a race, and more—all in Portuguese.
This is my secret recipe for teaching them Portuguese: wild ideas, real-life activities, and pure fun. It’s working for us, and I believe it can work for you too.
