Lista de Compras Challenge
Usually, I avoid taking my sons to the supermarket. They grab everything, ask for everything, and run around nearly crashing into other shoppers. Ok, I should probably have more control over them, and they should be better behaved, but it’s just easier not to take them at all. However, during these holidays, I had an idea: the Lista de Compras Challenge.
I handed my sons a Portuguese/English dictionary and told them in English what we needed from the supermarket. Their task was to find the words in Portuguese and write them down on our shopping list. They seemed to really enjoy browsing through the dictionary. Of course, they found some amusing words, but for the most part, they stayed focused.
At the supermarket, they decided that one would find half the items on our list while the other pushed the trolley, and then they would swap jobs. It worked really well! When they couldn’t remember a word’s meaning, I gave them clues in English, and they guessed the meaning quickly.
At home, we unpacked the shopping and named the products in Portuguese as we went. The boys really felt like they had accomplished a job and were pretty happy that I’d actually let them come with me to the supermarket. Win-win!
I highly recommend this activity. It was fun, and the more Portuguese vocabulary learned, the better, I say.
