The Benefits of Using Films in Language Learning
Recently, I showed my primary school-aged sons the movie Pelé. I skipped the scene where Pelé’s friend died, opting instead to explain what happened rather than show them the moment directly. What I really want to share is how much they loved the movie! They now tell everyone that their favourite soccer player is Pelé. I remind them he is no longer alive, but they don’t care—they love boasting about him. It made me so happy to see them enjoy the film while also learning about Brazil and this incredible story. The fact that the movie was in English certainly helped their understanding.
I studied Latin American film at university, and one of my favourite Brazilian films is Central do Brasil. Suddenly, it occurred to me that this movie might be a great way for my sons to learn more about Brazil, its cinema, and its language. This was their first time watching a film with subtitles, and I was so proud of them. The movie has a slow pace, but I explained what was happening, and they loved it. Again, I skipped the scene where the mother dies, avoiding anything too emotionally intense, but I explained the moment in my own words. This led to rich discussions and so many learning opportunities—it was a lovely experience. A few days later, one of my sons told me that while he was watching Central do Brasil, the Portuguese just started sounding like English. I thought this was a great sign that he’s well on his path to bilingualism. He’s absorbing more and more Portuguese.
Watching films in a foreign language is a powerful tool in the learning process. It exposes learners to authentic speech, natural accents, and cultural nuances. Subtitles provide a bridge, helping students gradually improve their listening skills and vocabulary. Even young learners can engage with the language in a meaningful way when guided through the experience.
Films make learning fun, immersive, and memorable. They allow learners to connect emotionally with the language and culture, making language acquisition feel natural and enjoyable. My experience with my sons has reinforced just how effective and rewarding this approach can be!
